Dear Mr. T,

The new ZEISS lenses for Nikon F mount have made big news worldwide since we announced them in CLN 23.

The enthusiasm will undoubtedly continue to build as more and more enthusiasts read about the whopping performance (see test results below) and the quite affordable prices.

For the ZEISS IKON system we can now share with you some of our test data using production equipment instead of prototypes. The performance, across the board, is quite impressive - far above the capabilities of digital cameras and scanners. This begins to explain why we are so convinced that photography still needs silver halide film. We are pleased that the marketplace of serious photographers agrees with us.

Here in CLN 24 we introduce to you two high-resolution films that we used in our recent tests. These films allow every photographer to conduct his or her own tests to determine each lenss "sweet spot", and to see just how great the difference between film and digital photography is. We are, of course, quite proud that the capabilities of the new ZEISS lenses meet or exceed those of the highest resolution films on the market.

When digital catches up with film, you may be confident that your ZEISS lenses will take you to the top of the class. Meanwhile, we wish you "ZEISS-quality" photographic results - whether youre shooting analog or digital.

The Sharpest SLR Lenses we've ever Tested



The new ZEISS ZF lenses went to test for resolving power recently. Attached to a Nikon F6, which was mounted on a Sachtler heavy duty tripod, we exposed our Eastman resolution test chart onto Kodak Imagelink HQ film. The best we had ever achieved before with any SLR lenses was 250 lp/mm.

The new Planar T* 1.4/85 ZF achieved that same resolution at f/5.6, and even down to f/2.

The new Planar T* 1,4/50 ZF went even further: It reached 320 lp/mm in the aperture range from f/5.6 to f/2.8, and 250 lp/mm at f/2.

The resolution test chart was placed in the center of the frame, and the negatives were inspected directly on a research microscope. No other process involving projection (through even the best enlarging lens) or digitizing (in today's best currently available scanners) is capable of transferring such high resolution values.

What we are saying is this: Carl Zeiss lenses are capable of capturing enormous amounts of information, if required, and will not be the limiting factor in the imaging process. Knowing that the lens you are using is the strongest link in the chain always inspires confidence, and may be critically important in some cases.

Resolving Power Record with ZEISS Biogon T* 2,8/25 ZM

When Hasselblad staff photographer Jens Karlsson took demo photos for the first Zeiss Ikon brochure in 2004, his photo of the carousel, taken with the ZM-Biogon 25 stood out for its enormous detail and clarity. So we used a ZM-Biogon 25 in a recent test to determine maximum resolving power. The high resolution film of choice was the SPUR Orthopan UR supplied and processed by SPUR.

The result was a whopping 400 lp/mm on film, recorded with the Biogon 25 at f/4 in the center of the image. This value, 400 lp/mm, corresponds to the maximum resolution theoretically possible at f/4; in other words it represents the calculated "diffraction limited" performance at this aperture. It is noteworthy that this test was conducted with a production lens on a production camera, indicating that the film was precisely positioned and flat.

Let's just say that this test is relevant to everyday photography the same way the top speed of a Formula 1 race car relates to everyday personal transportation. Of course, many people enjoy watching Formula 1 races ...

ZEISS IKON Coming Late, Going Strong!
The new ZEISS IKON camera system has caught on admirably well, and has justified our clients' patience through the longer-than-expected gestation period. The camera system has been on the market since November 2005. As you read this, approximately 3,500 ZEISS IKON cameras are in customers' hands or in the pipeline, with an average of 2.5 lenses sold for each body. The manufacturing capacity of 1,000 cameras per month is fully booked for several months to come.

ZEISS Lenses for Nikon F Mount

Carl Zeiss AG of Oberkochen, Germany is about to introduce ZF, a new range of interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras, both analog and digital. ZF lenses bring the highly acclaimed Carl Zeiss image quality to the Nikon SLR camera system, which has been the preferred equipment of millions of professional and ambitious amateur photographers for decades. ZF lenses can also be used on the Sinar m professional digital camera and a multitude of industrial video cameras.

ZF lenses provide Nikon F-mount cameras with the creative potential and phototechnical performance available so far only in the Contax system. In addition, ZF lenses incorporate new technical advances from the ZEISS Ultra Prime®, Master Prime® and DigiPrime® lenses for motion picture cameras. Results have been seen in feature films like "Lord of the Rings", "Alexander", "King Arthur", "Air Force One", "Collateral", "King Kong" and many commercials and music clips.

Like the ZEISS lenses for motion picture, ZF lenses feature unusually high mechanical quality, fixed focal length, very precise manual focussing, reliability, and exceptional durability. Special attention is paid to guarantee absolute color matching throughout the whole range of lenses resulting in state-of-the-art image quality.

The first ZF lens will be the Planar T* 1,4/50 ZF, which, in its Contax RTS version, was rated the world's best fast standard lens by "Popular Photography" in 1999. It will be followed by the Planar T* 1,4/85 ZF, which in its Contax RTS version became known as a great portrait lens and story-teller.

Both lenses will become available in spring 2006. The Pricing will be suitable competitive with similar items in the Nikon F-system. Several more ZF lenses will be introduced during 2006.
